Rick Najera: A Latino In Hollywood Is ‘almost White’
I wanted to bring it down and talk about it in a very human, honest way,” he says. Rick Najera has chronicled it all in his latest book, a memoir, titled Almost White: Forced Confessions of a Latino in Hollywood. The examination of his own career led Najera to realize something bigger. “My life, just looking at it individually, really tells the whole story of the Latino experience in America,” Najera added. By any count Rick Najera’s experience in Hollywood has been illustrious. He’s worked with top talent like Sidney Poitier, Whoopi Goldberg, John Leguizamo and Jim Carey. He was a writer for cutting-edge comedy shows like In Living Color and MADtv. He wrote and acted in a successful Broadway production – Latinologues. Hundreds of immigration activists march in Hollywood
(Yes, we can.)” There were hot dog carts, American flags and plenty of handmade signs. Many of the signs called on Congress to pass legislation that would open a path to citizenship for those who are here illegally. The march around Hollywood began around noon. Garavito and other activists acknowledged that some are losing faith in Congress as the government remains shut down . But they insisted that the time to tackle immigration is now. “We have hope,” said Garavito, a member of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, which helped organize the march. “Look at how many people are organizing. It’s the voice of the people that will tell Congress ‘Get your act together.’ ” The Hollywood rally was one of several staged in California and nationwide Saturday. In Orange County, an immigrant rights rally at the Irvine Spectrum started at 10:30 a.m. Events were also planned for San Bernardino, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento and more than 160 cities nationwide. As Washington remains preoccupied with the federal government shutdown, immigration has faded into the background. Earlier this week, House Democrats introduced an immigration bill that mostly parallels the one passed by the Senate in June. It would offer a path to citizenship for most of the 11 million immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally, as well as expand visa programs in an effort to eliminate current backlogs. But many House Republicans do not support a path to citizenship for the 11 million.
